Seminarian Tyler Arens will be an intern here over the summer. Please welcome him when you see him.
Dear Parishioners of St. Mary,
Hello! My name is Tyler Arens, your parish intern for the summer. I am a seminarian for the Diocese of Lansing attending Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit. I grew up in Westphalia, a small German-Catholic community northwest of Lansing. My home parish is St. Mary, Westphalia. I attended college down the road at the University of Michigan and graduated in 2008. It was during this time that I really began asking the question of how the Lord might be calling me, and it started in a priesthood discernment group.
After graduation, I worked for Michigan State University, later earned a Masters there, and lived in East Lansing. I attended St. Thomas Aquinas. It was during these years that I learned what it means to be an authentic disciple of Christ. I ultimately discerned a call to seminary and entered Sacred Heart in 2016.
I just finished my fourth year of seminary. Now I’m excited to be spending my summer with the people of St. Mary and St. Martha. The parish internship is an important part of a seminarian’s priestly formation program. It not only allows us to integrate all of our prior field education experiences and classroom studies, but also enhances our own vocational discernment.
I am thankful to Fr. Mark and Fr. Mike for this opportunity, and I look forward to learning from them more fully what priestly ministry looks like in the parish. I also look forward to learning from all of you better how I am being called in service to His Church. I look forward to seeing you.
