Email Address: frmarkrutherford@gmail.com

Born and raised in Ypsilanti, Michigan, and later in Ann Arbor, Fr. Mark grew up in a Catholic home with three brothers.  He first heard and discerned a call to the priesthood at age 13 while participating in a Franciscan University of Steubenville Youth Conference in 1997.  Growing up he attended Catholic schools, public schools, home schooled, and has even dropped out of high school. He and his three brothers loved and played hockey for a large part of their lives, which for Fr. Mark gave way to sports like wrestling, boxing, and Tae Kwon Do.  From 2001-2005, Fr. Mark attended Ave Maria College in Ypsilanti, Michigan, majoring in both Theology and Philosophy, with a minor in classical languages.  He was accepted as a seminarian of the Diocese of Lansing in the summer of 2005, and attended Sacred Heart Major Seminary from 2005-2009, earning the M. Div. and S.T.B.  He was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Earl Boyea on June 13th, 2009, the Feast of St. Anthony of Padua.  He was then assigned as Parochial Vicar of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Brighton from 2009-2012.  In 2012, he was assigned as Parochial Vicar of Church of the Resurrection in Lansing from 2012-2014.  In 2014, he is was assigned as Administrator of St. Mary Catholic Church and school in Williamston, and to study for the J.C.L. in Canon Law at Catholic University of America during the summers.  In 2015 he was named pastor of St. Mary Catholic Church and school. In addition, he serves on the Diocese of Lansing Education Board, and is in his fourth year of studies in Canon Law.

“In order to execute strategy and help the boat reach shore, the staff is the most important team of all.  The staff share, as the Second Vatican Council says, in the ministry proper to the pastor. The goal of their ministry is to call forth and equip others to do the work of ministry so that the Church may be built up.”

One day about 15 years ago, as I was walking through St. Joseph Church, I passed by the Tabernacle and clearly heard, “Nancy, I’m calling you”. It was a bit shocking to hear this as I noticed there was no one in the church except me. I looked at the Tabernacle and quickly ran out of the church. Today I realize it was Jesus calling me into a personal relationship with Him. That encounter lead me to begin volunteering with teens who were behind on their Sacraments and also was the path God used to teach me the Catholic Faith with new eyes and ears while learning anew the beauty and true gift of the Catholic Church. I taught these classes for three years at St. Agnes in Fowlerville and went on to become the youth minister at St. Joseph in Howell where I served for 8 years. Youth ministry was very exciting and quickly morphed into a family affair as my husband Dan helped me facilitate Life-Teen events, retreats, and three of my four children went through the program. I sensed God was calling me again, but where was very unclear. As I continued to pray God opened the door when the position of DRE at St. Mary’s became available. I have great love and devotion to the Blessed Mother and am thrilled to serve at Our Lady’s parish. I love to meet and talk with people so please stop by for a visit anytime.

She also oversees and dynamic Confirmation team who helps prepare the 7th and 8th graders to receive the Sacrament.  Laura and Nick have five beautiful children, Joseph, Isaac, Miriam and Seth and Zachary.  The family is very active together, enjoying a gamete of different types of sports and activities. Laura simply see’s youth ministry as expanding her family and is excited to get to know the youth better. Drop in for a visit on Sunday evening during the fall or check out the summer schedule as there are many activities to participate in at the parish for all teens.
